Welcome! This page of my website is dedicated to the anime and manga series Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal.

WARNING: This page contains spoilers.

Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal is a card game themed, fantasy action anime and manga series. It is the 3rd Yu-Gi-Oh spinoff series and the 4th total Yu-Gi-Oh anime series. The anime ran from 2011 - 2014 with a total of 146 episodes split between two cours. The anime series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment (later 4K Media) in the United States which produced a complete English dub of of the series, albeit one with significant modifications that will be discussed more below. The manga version of Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal was serialized monthly in V-Jump, from December 2010 to June 2015 and licensed in the US in English by Viz Media, who produced an unedited English translation. The manga and the anime follow the same plot at the very beginning, however they greatly diverge rather early on. These differences will be discussed further down on the page.

Synopsis

The anime series consists of 146 episodes divided into 2 cours of 43 episodes each and 5 seasons + 2 specials. The series follows a plucky middle schooler named Yuma Tsukumo, who has rather lousy dueling skills, and the mysterious alien dueling genius spirit named Astral - that only Yuma can see, that appears during a game of duel monsters when a pendant he received from his missing father breaks and seemingly repairs itself. Together with Astral he is to collect 99 "Numbers" cards that contain Astral's lost memories. Despite the shared basic premise, that's about where the shared plot between the anime and manga ends (around vol. 2 of the manga). As the manga is lesser known the plot and character related information on this page will be skewed towards the manga.

The Manga

As previously stated, the manga and the anime have the same beginning and basic plot, Yuma and Astral duel for numbers cards in order recover Astral's lost memories, however the manga arguably stays more strictly to this basic premise than the anime, and a few characters make appearances in the manga who don't appear in the anime. After gaining several numbers cards Yuma and Astral are sought out by Kaito Tenjo, a numbers hunter working for Dr. Faker, the first antagonist of this work, who intends to destroy Astral World, Astral's homeworld. Mr. Heartland, an antagonist from the anime also makes an appearance, although it is a more prominent one in the manga.

Personal Opinions + Fanworks

This section contains my opinions.

As you may have guessed by the mere existence of this page, Zexal is my favorite YGO spinoff series. I actually never expected to like the anime as much as I did because it has such a bad reputation among English speaking YGO fans but I really liked it. My main motivation for making this page was the fact that there wasn't really anythng related to Zexal on personal websites, probably because by the time it came out the era of personal websites was coming to a close. If I had to choose between the anime and the manga I'd probably have to go with the anime even though I consider the manga super underrated, because the anime has more moments that I really liked. If I had to name my favorite thing about the anime it would have to be the characters and their dynamics.

Fanart

Fanart drawn by the webmaster.

It's Durbe & Mizael! One day I was going though some artbook scans I had saved and came across an image with a pose similar to this. I like how clean it turned out.

Yuma! Although I've drawn him several times before, it hasn't been recently and the strangeness of his hair never ceases to amaze me.
